The three works above comprise a series of pulp paintings that marry technique to subject matter.  Low ratios of formation aid to paper pulp create hazy boundaries between colors and on the white base sheet, and a dreamlike mythological effect.   Embedded handmade paper elements add structure to the “myths.”

What is pulp painting?
Commonly, paper pulp for painting is finely beaten using a specialty beater, called a Hollander beater.  Cotton or Abaca paper are commonly used.  Pulp is typically pigmented with earth or aqueous pigments.  Colored pulp is mixed with a special chemical agent (often natural) to enable the pulp to flow like paint.  Colored pulp is then applied to a base sheet of wet paper using various instruments including syringes and squirt bottles, brushes and stencils. The ratio of pulp to “flow” agent impacts how crisp or feathered the edges of the colored pulp.
